LOT 0094

Rare Ohio State Seal Breast Plate

[ translate ]

Considered the most desirable and rare Union plate from the Civil War era, the Ohio state seal breast plate offered in this lot is one of the finest undug examples ever to be made publicly available at auction.

This grouping is identified by an old tag as belonging to William Seacrist (sometimes "Sacrist") of the 76th Ohio, and includes Seacrist's Ohio state seal breast plate, his brass epaulettes, and a standard federally-issued eagle breast plate.

The Ohio state seal breast plate is ~2.5 inches in diameter and features correct, brass mounting loops. Some wear and light scratches to the lead backing (including a small puncture in the center to keep the plate from moving around in a display case). The face of the plate is nearly immaculate, and exhibits a pleasing light plum patina. The minute detail of its design, such as the stipling and hatch marks, are impressively rendered.

Seacrist's brass epaulettes and federally-issued breast plate are standard and in overall fine condition.

Tags identifying the articles in this lot are included, as is a letter of provenance with details as to the items origin. Authenticity is guaranteed for life, as with all of our other items offered for sale.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Breast Plate, Belt buckle, Relic, Dug Relic, Undug Relic]
