Rare Proto-Viking Gilt Bronze Ornament

Northern Europe/Russia, Migration Period/Finno-Ugric/Proto-Viking, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. An elegant piece of decoration for clothing or horse tack, made of cast bronze with a raised, rectangular surface and shallow, sloping shoulders covered in shining gilt. The hollow, concave back of the piece contains a partial stem that would have been larger when made and used to attach this to whatever it originally decorated. Imagine this piece shining from the side of a saddle or a belt. Size: 1.4" W x 0.95" H (3.6 cm x 2.4 cm)
