Rare Spanish Colonial Silver Candlestick,cir.1630
Made in Mexico City circa 1630. Excellent condition measures 15" tall x 6 1/2 " base , Heavy Silver, location hallmark: "the paired Pillars of Hercules with a crown above and a make head in right profile over the initials MO in the interior space. Hallmarks depicting the shield of the Dominican order indicate that the candlestick was commissioned for, or at least belonged to, a monastic establishment or church of that group at one time." shows patterns of delicately incised strap work alternating with raised ovoid bosses. Heavy silver weighing 3lbs 14oz. Provenance: Included and illustrated in the Cambios Exhibit, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1992. It is pictured on page 117of "Cambios: the Spirit of Transformation in Spanish Colonial Art /Essays by Gabrielle Palmer and Donna Pierce" Holler and Sauders, Ltd. to current New Mexico Collection.
