DESCRIPTION: Steuben Iridized Sapphire Blue over flint white vase decorated with Gold Aurene leaf-and-vine and Intarsia collar.
Iridized lead glass with applied ornament.

“This rare vase is an example of what is probably Carder’s ‘Tiffany Blue’ cased on Flint White with Gold Aurene ornament. Most pieces of this type are found in shapes similar to those used for Tyrian pieces.” Footnote to Fig. 10.40 of Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff.

At about p. 5 at item 16 Mr. Carder in the accompanying records tells his interviewers that in this piece “…the body… is Calcite inside flashed with a blue glass and decorated on the outside…with Gold Aurene leaves and sprays. On the top…is a Gold Aurene…decorated with a design in blue and white…one of the most difficult pieces…we ever made…” (The blue glass is obtained from cobalt oxide mixed with Crystal.)
