Rare Superb "HEADDRESS BUTONS LEGA-WAREGA BWAMI" - Buttons; Plant fibers - Congo

Splendid and very contemporary, rare ‘Lega-Warega Bwami button hat’ from the D. R Congo, composed from a multitude of buttons and plant fibres. Initiate of the Lega Bwami. This kind of hat was worn by initiates of the Bwami cult, a “semi-secret” initiatory society which organised the social structure and watched over the stability of the Lega community. The Lega are a Bantu forest people from central Africa, established mainly in eastern Congo, to the east of the Lwalaba River, extending high into the Mitumba mountains, in the provinces of south Kivu and Maniema.
