Rare Tana Torajah Sacred Mawa Textile

The Toraja people of central Sulawesi value as sacred the cloths called mawa, which are stored as family treasures and brought out when needed to sanctify important rituals. This is a rare 19th century example, hand woven and hand painted. The textile has been Museum Mounted and professionally sewn to a dark brown background and stretched professionally.
