Rare Tuerk Bros. Casting Reel
An unmarked example that closely resembles a reel sold through the Angling Marketplace from the Steve Lumpkin collection (February 2021, lot 68), that was marked in script letters "Tuerk Bros. - Chicago". Differing only from the Lumpkin reel by having a hard rubber grasp and counter-balance handle weight, this is the same size reel, 2 3/4" in diameter with a 2 1/4" wide spool that has click and drag switches in the same locations on the head cap, and has the same shouldered pillars. The nickel-plated brass reel appears to have a replacement foot, otherwise is in VG/VG+ condition with plating loss/flaking. Little is known of the Tuerk Brothers business other than Lumpkins notes that the reel dates to 1899, and an internet search that brings up an "Auxiliary Business" from 1878 to the 1920's.
