Rare consecrated Vajra Dorje diamond and lightning with 8 arms वज्र Bronze. Late 18th century Tibet. Buddhist ritual item. 8 arms. Bronze Dorje consecrated by a lama (central piece of fabric) . Patina of wear. Size: 3 x 3 x 11 cm, Weight: 87 g. Vajra, a Sanskrit word (वज्र) , meaning 'diamond' and 'lightning', is an important symbol and a ritual instrument in Hinduism and especially in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition ("way of the diamond") to which it gave its name. It represents indestructibility and immutability that comes in the face of all obstacles. The Vajra, a weapon without equal, represents the 'upāya', an efficient medium that destroys ignorance. The symbol formed by two crossed vajras is called 'viśvavajra' (vajra of the universe) , 'dorje gyatram' or 'double vajra' in Tibetan. Its Sanskrit name is linked to a cosmological myth that says it was the first object in the universe to take shape from the wind. It is the symbol of efficient action par excellence, and the attribute of the transcendent Buddha Amoghasiddhi. In rituals, the vajra is often used with the ghanta bell. They symbolise, respectively, the masculine and the feminine, efficient action (upāya, the useful means to attain wisdom) - or compassion- and great wisdom (prajñā) .
