Vajra, a Sanskrit word (वज्र) , meaning 'diamond' and 'lightning', is an important symbol and a ritual instrument in Hinduism and especially in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition ("way of the diamond" to which it gave its name. It represents indestructibility and immutability that comes in the face of all obstacles. The Vajra, an arm without equal, represents the 'upāya', an efficient medium that destroys ignorance.
