Title: Rare and large Myanmar Puppet
Origin: Myanmar/Burma
Date/Period: 19/20th century
Materials: Wood, pigments, hair, velvet and cotton clothes, «jewels»
Size:70 (H) cm.
Description: Large Antique Burmese Marionette Puppet – The princess Hand Carved and painted with delicate jewelry and clothing. Myanmar puppetry, or yoke thé, dates back to the 15th century when it was used to entertain the royal courts. The art of puppetry reached its peak and popularity in the period of the last dynasty of the kingdom of Burma, the Kon-baung dynasty (1752-1885), with the forced transfer of the Thai court to the Burmese capital, AVA. The success of the Puppet Theater was such that King Bagyi-daw (1819-1837) legislated in detail on the practice of this art to the point of defining the number of characters and even the type of wood to be used for its making. A minister charged with overseeing this art and its practice was also created. There are 28 main characters in traditional Burmese puppet shows, ranging from gods, animals, monsters and royals. Traditional Burmese puppets are carved, polished, sanded and painted, before they are dressed in hand-stitched costumes; the entire process requires around twenty days of production from start to finish. Strings are also attached to every joint. The puppets are very realistic in carving, clothing and ornaments, in the use of human hair for their wigs and, in rare cases, the body of each puppet reveals its gender. They sometimes have the body with protective tattoos usually drawn in red ink over the white color of the skin, made from eggshell, and a mobility of arms, hands, fingers, eyes and mouth similar to that of a small human being. Myanmar Puppetry has almost disappeared over the past few decades due to the diverse modern forms of entertainment, lack of encouragement and very few skillful artists remaining.
