Rare and large red lacquered trunk from Ryūkyū Islands (Okinawa) , extensively painted with Chinese style designs of cranes standing on turtles in a Japanese apricot and bamboo landscape, its corners strengthened with metal fittings and a large square key-plate. Three of the four sides are decorated with the same design as the top. Inside black lacquered with an extra tray. These chests were part of the dowry of women.
