Rare niello handmade Mayim Acharoinim holder , Amsterdam , mid 20th century

Expertly crafted holder for mayim acharoinim , washing of fingers before the grace after meals. Round dish is set on three legs. Swivelling removable fish is the pointer for the 12 zodiac signs signifying the twelve months. The signs are crafted on small plaques moulded around the inside walls of the dish. A water cistern with removable lid with eagle atop is attached to the rim and is supported by two lions on their hind legs. Working tap has a screw knob with tiny cockerel perched on top of pipe. The piece is etched and engraved with niello plates, coloured stones set in various corners (some missing).

Material not confirmed - parts are possibly silver .
