The Bozo are an semi-nomadic ethnic group of fishermen moving along the entire Niger River and its tributaries. They are known for their very figurative and colourful puppets and animal masks. This rare mask represents a hippopotamus, which is much feared by fishermen. It is characterized by the attribute of two ‘noses’ and three eyes: an open mouth with teeth. It is painted in green, yellow and red with white dots. There is a missing piece on the left ear. Patina of use.
