Rare 'pre-earthquake' crepe print (chirimengami-e) - Takahashi Shōtei (Hiroaki) 高橋 松亭 (1871-1945) - "Edomisaka" - Japan - 'pre-earthquake', before 1923 A rare 'pre-earthquake' crepe print by Takahashi Shōtei. Title: "Edomisaka". Seal: Shōtei. Illustrator: Takahashi Shōtei (Hiroaki) Takahashi Shotei (1871-1945) . Publisher: Watanabe Shōzaburo. Date: 'pre-earthquake', before 1923. Catalogue number Shotei. com: M-7. Print from the collection of a Swedish naval officer who was stationed in Japan in 1923. Image format, incl. margin: 30. 8 - 31. 3 x 13. 8 - 14. 1 cm (hosoban) . Size of the supporting paper: 40. 9 x 19. 6 cm. Condition: the crepe print is in very good condition. The lot will be packaged with care and shipped insured with a track & trace code. As part of the shin hanga or new prints movement in 1907 Takahashi Shōtei started designing for the S. Watanabe Colour Print Co. Shōtei was the first designer to be recruited into Watanabe's stable of artists. By 1923, Shōtei had produced nearly 500 designs for Watanabe, when Tokyo was hit by the Great Kanto earthquake. The fires ignited by the earthquake raged for three days and Watanabe's print shop and all the woodblocks created by Shōtei and the other early shin hanga artists were destroyed. After the disaster, Shōtei produced more prints for Watanabe, some of which were reproductions of the older images lost in the fires.
