Ratification & Implementation of the Massachusetts State Constitution, Oldest Continuously Functioning Constitutional Compact
Broadside

Broadside, "State of Massachusetts-Bay, In Convention," 1p, 10" x 15", Massachusetts Bay, June 16, 1780. Signed in type by James Bowdoin, as president of the constitutional convention. Toning and scattered foxing. Flattened folds, reinforced at verso. Expert conservation to very small loss at left blank margin and bottom edge. Else, in near fine condition. Ex-Sotheby's, where it sold for over $6,000.

A very rare broadside announcing formal ratification of Massachusetts' Constitution by the Constitutional Convention. The compact is largely the work of John Adams, though he was joined on a committee appointed to draft the document by Samuel Adams and James Bowdoin. In addition to declaring when the constitution would take effect, the present resolution directed that elections be held for governor, lieutenant governor, senators and representatives.

James Bowdoin II (1726-1790) was an American politician from Boston, Massachusetts, who was active during the American Revolution and the following decade. He initially gained fame and influence as a wealthy merchant. He served in both branches of the Massachusetts General Court from the 1750s to the 1770s. Although he was initially supportive of the royal governors, he opposed British colonial policy and eventually became an influential advocate of independence. From 1775 to 1777, he served as president of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress's executive council, the de facto head of the Massachusetts government. Bowdoin was elected president of the constitutional convention that drafted the state's constitution in 1779.
