Ray Hendershot (1931 - 2019) American
Watercolor on Paper
Measure 5"in H x 9"in W and 11 1/4"in H x 15 1/2"in W with frame

Known for: Houses in rural landscape and still-life painting
Biography: "I feel blessed and honored to be a painter. For more than half a century, I have had the privilege of putting down on paper, my thoughts and my feelings about the world around me and those things that have touched my life. If, by doing so, I have also touched the lives of others, then my mission as an artist has been fulfilled." - Ray Hendershot. The Pennsylvania countryside provides the subject matter for this watercolor artist. He is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still life. However, he explains, the real subject of his work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiquated crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. "I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware, the signs of many years of wear and hard use. Over the years, I have developed a number of texturing methods that I feel adequately depict these signs of aging.
