Ray O. Evans (American, 1887-1954) Hold Fast, Young Russia!, Baltimore American newspaper cartoon, 1914-1917 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 11 x 21-1/2 inches (27.9 x 54.6 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Evans Ohio native Ray Oscar Evans landed his first job at The Columbus Dispatch in advertising in 1910. From 1913 to 1922 he worked at The Dayton Daily News and Baltimore American, where he became widely known, and sold cartoons to Judge, Life, Puck and The Literary Digest. In 1922 he returned to Ohio and The Columbus Dispatch to work with Dudley Fisher, Billy Ireland and, later, Milton Caniff in the creation of illustrations, cartoons and comic strips. By the late 1940s Evans was the newspaper's lead cartoonist and his work appeared in papers across the country. This editorial cartoon by Evans was created and published in the Baltimore American during World War I. England, France, the U.S. and Russia strive to make a bridge for "World Freedom" to cross, and it is the youthful Russian who clings to the far side of the chasm. Given that the Bolsheviks withdrew Russia from the war soon after taking power in Russia this original must have been published prior to the last months of 1917.
