RONALD REAGAN SIGNS A COPY OF HIS LAST LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

On 5 November 1994, Ronald Reagan issued a letter to the American people in which he announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. He had received the diagnosis two months earlier and had spent the time in between working on what he knew would be his final communication to the people whom he'd served as president for eight years. Though there was speculation as to whether he'd shown signs of the disease while president, his doctors confirmed that overt symptoms did not manifest at any time prior to late 1992. Within three years, he had all but disappeared from the public eye, passing away of pneumonia at ninety-three years old on 5 June 2004.
