Rebecca Salsbury James was a self-taught American artist born in London and raised in New York City, where her marriage to photographer Paul Strand brought her into the modernist circle surrounding Alfred Stieglitz. A close friend of Georgia O’Keeffe, she traveled with her to New Mexico in 1929 and later settled in Taos, whose landscape and cultural traditions helped shape her art. James became particularly known for reverse-painted oils on glass, depicting flowers, shells, still lifes, and Southwestern subjects. This exacting technique required her to apply details first and backgrounds last on the back of a glass pane, with the finished image viewed from the front. The glass gave her compositions luminous color, crisp outlines, and a smooth, reflective surface. Combining simplified forms with the intimacy of folk art, James developed a distinctive modernist style.
