Gorgonians are in all respects marine animals, more precisely "colonial animals", that is, made up of many small individual animals (polyps) that work together as a single organism. Gorgonians are also called "sea fans" due to their characteristic and easily recognizable shape. In fact, its branches develop by welding together like a large flat reticulated fan. Their fan shape is the perfect compromise between the need to maximize the exposed surface to intercept plankton and the microscopic organisms on which the polyps feed and that of minimizing resistance to hydrodynamic forces. Ctenocella Pectinata is a species of red Gorgonian belonging to the Ctenocellidae family, more commonly known as a comb gorgonian due to its shape which resembles that of a comb. It lives on the seabed at depths between 5 and 200 meters. Two curiosities:
1. the fibers that make up this gorgonian are very resistant and used for the construction of some types of fabrics;
2. Ctenocella pectinata is also used in the pharmaceutical field as it contains substances with anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor principles.
We also recognize its exceptional aesthetic value, a very refined design object if mounted on a pedestal. Able to embellish a wall if inserted in a frame.
Happy bidding.
