"Richard Stone Reeves flew to Lexington to sketch Lothario in the flesh, with Calumet Farm as the backdrop.Lothario, bred and raced by Lucille Wright Markey?s fabled Calumet Farm, was the farm?s best hope for the Centennial Kentucky Derby of 1974. From Calumet?s best family, Lothario?s dam was Tim Tam?s multiple stakes producing full sister, Mon Ange, a daughter of Two Lea. Trainer Reggie Cornell was emphatic about the colt?s potential, saying, ?Lothario had more ability and promise than any horse I have ever trained. As far as conformation is concerned, well...he?s the most beautiful horse I?ve ever seen.? Margaret Glass, Calumet?s business and office manager, who was at the helm for all eight of Calumet?s Kentucky Derby wins, shared the optimism, declaring, ?This is the colt we have been waiting for.? Then she added, ?He was farm manager Melvin Cinnamon?s pick of the crop from the very beginning.? Lothario had turned in brilliant workouts," "and his maiden win was by five widening lengths. But it was not to be, as he suffered an injury in his next start, preventing him from fulfilling the expectations that had surrounded him. Later retired, he was purchased by Robert Fishman, who had followed him closely, and knew well of the esteem held for the colt.Lothario initially stood at The Stallion Station, Lexington, Ky. His first crop proved a resounding success, full of quality, with each and every starter a winner. Included among them was Lot O? Gold, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Donn Handicap, and Clark Handicap, and second to Spectacular Bid in the Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Fountain of Youth Stakes, and Hutcheson Stakes. Lothario vied with Mr. Prospector as the leading first-year sire by average earnings index. Such was his success that a significant offer was made and later accepted to stand him in New York at the inception of their enhanced breeding program."
