Reg Manning (American, 1905-1986) Hired Help Is So Independent These Days, Arizona Republic newspaper cartoon, January 8, 1943 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 12 x 10-1x4 inches (30.5 x 26.0 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Reg Manning Reginald West Manning moved from Kansas City, Missouri to Phoenix, Arizona in 1919 and in 1926 took charge of photography and art for the Arizona Republic newspaper. He was initially known for his feature cartoon page The Big Parade and became the paper's chief editorial cartoonist in 1934. His work was regularly displayed on the front page, syndicated to newspapers throughout the United States, and he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1951. He remained full-time with the Republic until 1980 and continued to contribute to his death in 1986. Throughout his presidency Franklin D. Roosevelt enjoyed large Democratic Party majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives. This facilitated passage of New Deal and defense legislation, yet in some cases conservative Democrats teamed with Republicans to make matters more difficult for the President. The 1942 elections brought changes and when the 78th Congress convened on January 3, 1943, the Democratic majority was significantly reduced. In this splendid cartoon FDR looks upon the emergence of a more independent Congress with some trepidation. This original was published in the January 8, 1943, edition of the Arizona Republic and in many additional newspapers through the 15th. Reg Manning signed his work with a self-caricature in the form of a cartoony cactus, and it is featured in this original. In addition, he drew, dated (2x15x43) and signed the same caricature a second time at left in a dedication in which the name of the recipient has been scratched out.
