Regency Mahogany Stick Barometer,
Fox of Leeds, England, early 19th century.
Solid mahogany backboard shaped to conform with applied molding of an urn on pedestal with acorn finial, surmounting a scrolled ovolo-cornered reserve inlaid with an engraved silver-washed brass plaque signed "FOX. LEEDS" at top, bisected by the partially recessed glass mercury tube and fitted at right with an adjustable needle sliding along a ruled register that ranges from 31 to 27 bars, the inscriptions at left indicating "FAIR / Change / RAIN / [or] Stormy" weather, the tube continuing down waist of backboard underneath applied bead molding terminating at scrolled base supporting larger urn turning and acorn pendant, the reverse showing two screws securing both urn moldings and copper wire ties at ends of brass tube, gauged and fitted with hardware to hang flush with wall, wd. 4 1/2, dp. 2 3/4, ht. 44 in.
