Reinier Nooms, called 'Zeeman'
(Amsterdam 1623/1624 - 1664)
Fishermen and vessels on the beach
Signed R. Zeeman lower left
Oil on canvas laid down on panel, 14.6 x 19.4 cm
Provenance:
Private collection, the Netherlands
Note:
Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman (Dutch for sailor), was a maritime painter known for his highly detailed paintings and etchings of ships. Nooms started painting and drawing in his later years, following a rough, drunken life as a sailor. It is not known how he acquired his skills as an artist. His knowledge of ships is evident in his work: ships and foreign locations are depicted with high accuracy and in great detail. This served as an example for other artists. As a widely travelled artist, Nooms visited Paris, Venice and possibly Berlin, and also journeyed along the coast of North Africa.
