Relief, Head of Saint John the Baptist - Medieval - Alabaster - Late 15th century

A very rare alabaster relief depicting the head of Saint John the Baptist on a plate, flanked by Saint Peter and Thomas a Becket. Christ appears at the bottom as the Man of Sorrows, rising from his tomb. At the top, two angels are shown carrying the Saint's soul away in a napkin Alabaster with traces of gilding. Nottingham. Late 15th century. Mounted on an old-fashioned (probably 19th century) burgundy velvet back-plate (easily removable if desired) Dimensions of the back : 36cm x 23,5cm Dimensions of the alabaster: 26cm x 17cm A comparable relief in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London: https: //collections. vam. ac. uk/item/O71703/head-of-st-john-the-panel-unknown/ Provenance: Belgian antiques dealer; Belgian private collection
