Remarkable and rare - Muzé necklace from Somalia...

Remarkable and rare - Muzé necklace from Somalia from the mid-19th century. Necklace made of two crescents, the larger one in the upper register and the smaller one below. Chain of origin. Decoration by coarse granulation and application of geometric elements such as rhombuses, rosettes and filigree finish. Welded parts made by stamping and embossing. Finished below each crescent with empty spheres. The back of each crescent is devoid of decoration. This jewel was a female pectoral offered to the Muslim woman on the occasion of her wedding in the Harer region located in the Horn of Africa. It was often associated with amber beads providing protection. A similar copy is in the British Museum under inventory number Af1928, 0509.66 and another in the Victoria and Albert Museum under number 157-1898.

Length of the two crescents: 26 cm.
