Wonderful Art Deco statue, called 'Maternité', by René Daemen for Villeroy & Boch from 1935. It is an almost abstractly stylized Madonna and Child, in a timeless version. Note the graceful lines. The whole exudes serenity and intimacy. The statue and base are made in one piece from earthenware, with a matte black, slightly crackled glaze finish. The statue is marked at the bottom with an imprinted stamp "Villeroy & Boch, Made in Luxembourg" and the number "529". It is in good general condition with signs of use.
