René His (1877-1960) - Le château sur la rivière

Important, evocative and beautiful oil painting on canvas, from the French school and from the early 20th century.

The painting, signed E. Rene' His (Colombes 1877- Paris 1960) on the bottom right, depicts one of the artist's most classic and famous subjects, a tree-lined river landscape.

René Charles Edmond His, who always signed his paintings René His or E. René His, was born in Colombes (Seine) on 15 February 1877. He was a pupil of Jules Lefebvre, T. Robert-Fleury and Henry Biva. He was best known for his landscape paintings and was a member of the Society of French Artists from 1900. In 1900 he received a medal for his works of Provence and Algiers and received an "Honourable Mention" at the Universal Exhibition of the same year.
He traveled widely in search of the idyllic river scenes he depicted and for which he is particularly celebrated. To these scenes he brought a fineness of touch and detail that has recently cemented his reputation as one of the finest landscape painters of the 20th century.

The painting was recently cleaned.
The canvas is in good condition, there is only a small restoration (see photo of the back of the canvas) .
