René-Jacques, whose real name is René Giton, was born on 29th May 1908 in Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and died on 6th July 2003 in Torcy. René Giton was born in May 1908 in Phnom Penh. His father was a colonial administrator. He studied in France, in Royan, then at the Lycée Buffon in Paris. He became passionate about photography, and in 1927 won the first prize in an amateur photography competition in Royan. After his military service, he began studying law but chose to change direction in order to devote himself to his passion. He took up his artist’s name: René-Jacques. In 1938-1939, he became the set photographer for director, Georg Wilhelm Pabst. He became a member of the ‘Rectangle’ group in 1941 and in 1946 was one of the founders of the ‘Le Groupe des XV’, a collective of photographers that included Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Pierre Jahan, in the 1950s. In 1991, he donated his work to the State. The René-Jacques donation is kept at the Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine (MAP) and includes his negatives, a set of more than 20,000 prints, as well as archives made up of his publications, his professional correspondence and plates of reading prints that were used to spread his images. René-Jacques died on 6th July 2003 in Torcy at the age of 95.
