René Paraire was born on November 22, 1919 in Gafsa in Tunisia. He completed his artistic training at the end of the 1930s at the Beaux-Arts in Tunis where his father was a civil servant. He obtained a study grant, then a travel grant which allowed him to visit Rome, Florence and Amsterdam. He settled in Gauguin's studio in Montmartre before returning to Tunis.

At the time of the Second World War, although reformed, René Paraire took an active part in the Tunis campaign in 1942 which pitted allied troops against German and Italian forces. He joined the Free French Forces and joined England in 1944 with the troops preparing the landing in Normandy. Member of the Second Armored Division, he was injured on August 25, 1944 during the liberation of Paris.

People who knew René Paraire well insist that "René Paraire will not organize any major exhibition, will not participate in any regional or national exhibition and will not be attached to any gallery". On the contrary, he chose to live and work far from the artistic centers he frequented and settled in Hérault at Grau d'Agde.

He paints numerous watercolors, mainly seascapes, still lifes, landscapes, portraits on different media. The painter died in 1987 at the age of 68. A major exhibition paid tribute to him in Agde in 2013-2014 and an esplanade along the sea has borne his name there since June 2014.
