Revolutionary War Era Canteen

[ translate ]

Oak canteen with broadsheet iron hoops/straps and a lead pewter spout. Mid to late 18th century. Diam. approx. 7 1/2 in.

A fine example of a Revolutionary war era canteen. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, canteens were typically made of tin. A total blockade of American seaports by March 1776, however, denied the colonists foreign sources of tin leading to the widespread adoption of wooden canteens for the Continental Army.

Condition: some worming and expected oxidation.

[Revolutionary War, Colonial America, Militaria, Canteens, George Washington]
