Dr. Rhine made a scientific study of the rem of "Psychic" powers. his efforts are one of the few studies that really tried to approach the idea using the scientific method. while his efforts showed that there was a strong suggestion that there were people who were able to do things that are considered Paranormal. Dr. Rhine was unable to prove that these results were repeatable and measurable by the methods and equipment that he had at his disposal. in any case, believer or skeptic, this is a interesting book to read. [review]

Joseph Banks Rhine (1895-1980) was an American botanist who founded parapsychology as a branch of psychology, also founding the parapsychology lab at Duke University (now succeeded by the Rhine Research Center), the Journal of Parapsychology, the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man, and the Parapsychological Association.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 1937 book, "one question about our fundamental nature remains conspicuously unsolved. It is the greatest of all puzzles about the nature of man: What is the human mind? Where does it belong, if anywhere, in the scheme of our knowledge as a whole?" (Pg. 4) Later, he adds, "The experiments described in this narrative or research in our laboratory at Duke University were undertaken with the express purpose of cornering the problem of whether anything enters into the mind by a route other than the recognized senses. The answer which those experiments have yielded must be weighed carefully, and by each person in accordance with his own basis for judgment. It is an answer that is frankly presented as only a beginning on the great problem with which our work has been concerned."
