Richard Nixon Typed Letter Signed, Ranking History's Vice Presidents: "We must rate high Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt"
"We must rate high Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt"
TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, May 2, 1967. Letter to Wayne M. McCann, in part: "I have not reached a decision with regard to 1968, but as I weigh the factors involved it is most gratifying to know that I have your confidence and support. No one can predict today what will happen at the Republican Convention next year. You may be sure, however, that the decision of the delegates to the convention will, as in the past, have my unqualified support. Far more important than the personal ambitions of any of the potential nominees is our responsibility to provide the new leadership which America and the Free World so desperately need. I shall do everything in my power to see that a united Republican Party meets this great challenge.
Regarding your question on Vice Presidents, it would not be fair to compare recent holders of the office with past Vice Presidents, since the office itself has taken on greater prestige and duties in the last two decades. However, as for the earlier Vice Presidents, certainly from their subsequent performances we must rate high Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt." In fine condition.
