Rider - Dogon - Mali - 24.5 cm (No Reserve Price)

[ translate ]

Bronze Dogon riders on horseback from Mali.

The Dogon are a population group from the Bandiagara Cliffs region east of the Niger River in Mali.

This bronze statue is made using the lost wax method, also known as 'cire perdue'. The horse was associated with the Hogon, a religious leader. Horses were quite rare and therefore valuable. Both horses and riders are highly valued in Dogon culture because they symbolize power, strength and wealth. A statue like this was placed in the home of a prominent person in the community.

The statue is in good condition, with a beautiful patina. NB! The statue has a narrow base and the left hind leg is slightly shorter. The statue can stand on its own, but is sometimes a bit shaky.
