Riminese School, circa 1320 | The Nativity; Saint Christopher, Saint John the Baptist and a female saint
Property of the descendants of William & Robert Adam
Riminese School, circa 1320
The Nativity; Saint Christopher, Saint John the Baptist and a female saint
tempera and remains of gold ground on panel, with painted reverse
painted surface: 20 x 13 cm.; 7 7/8 x 5 1/8 in.
unframed: 22 x 14.3 cm.; 8 5/8 x 5 5/8 in.
framed: 26.1 x 18.3 cm.; 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 in.
Condition Report:
The panel, painted on both sides, is flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and dull. The majority of the gold ground has been removed, though small traces remain along the upper margin, and around the silhouettes and haloes of some of the figures. There are otherwise numerous surface abrasions, scratches and reusltant small losses to the paint surface, visible in the image, and an additional small loss caused by old woodworm, lower left (more extensive woodworm damage is visible on the reverse). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some tiny retouchings to the Christ Child's robe, lower left (in Saint Christopher's arms), but otherwise very little intervention. The panel is in overall moderate condition.
