Coming from a family of circus equestrians in England, James Dutton began appearing in the 1880s as America’s youngest rider and wire performer. He made his way through all the great circuses of the era, starting with the Sells Brothers and ending with Ringling’s great Madison Square Garden show. He would later go on to form his own circus with his wife. In the upper left, the artist has included cameo portraits of the five Ringling founders.
