Riquet Mokka-Schokolade. ca. 1925.
Hohlwein, a master of simplifying shapes and compressing figures into silhouettes of color and pattern, produced this incredibly vibrant image for Riquet Chocolate Coffee. We’re lithographically led into a Bedouin tent, where the two occupants are nearly camouflaged as their robes blend with the golden-orange fabric of their shelter. The scene is nearly divided in two by the multicolored wisp of smoke rising off a still-smoldering ember, the smoky trail itself nearly getting lost in the lush backdrop as one of the denizens quietly enjoys his beverage of choice. During the first half of the 1920s, Hohlwein designed approximately a dozen posters for Riquet, a company that dealt in tea, cocoa, and chocolate products.
