"Road to Rangoon"

This fascinating map is an enlarged version of one by Robert Chapin that was included in the March 19, 1945 issue of Time Magazine. It graphically depicts the region covering eastern India, Burma, and portions of western Thailand and China. Bold black and white arrows show the approaching forces of Britain, India, China, and the United States on Rangoon, with both Thailand and French Indochina noted as under Japanese control. Several railroads are noted on the map as well as the Burma and Ledo (Stilwell) roads that brought critical supplies to China during the war effort.

Robert M. Chapin began working for Time magazine in 1937 after a short stint as a photo retoucher at Newsweek. During World War II, his prolific team produced about a map every day to keep up with the breaking war news. Chapin would spend a total of 33 years with the company and retired as the cartography head of the magazine.
