Robert E. Lee and Mary Custis Lee, Signed CDVs
Lot of 2 CDVs, the first, a vignetted bust view of Confederate Army of Northern Virginia Commander Robert E. Lee in uniform, backmark of Vannerson & Jones. Signed "R.E. Lee" on print beneath the image. Together with an uncredited CDV of Lee's wife, Mary Custis Lee (1807-1873), signed "Mary C Lee" on mount beneath the print. The vignetted bust portrait of Mrs. Lee has been lightly hand tinted, possibly by the couple's artistically-inclined daughter Mildred, who is known to have so prepared CDVs for presentation by her mother.
Condition Report: Corners clipped on both CDVs. R.E. Lee's diagonally creased at upper right, just clear of image, with lighter bend from left side just touching nose; verso soiled, with old cello tape and other stains, and an abrasion taking most of the backmark. Mrs. Lee's somewhat toned. Images framed for display. Both signatures very good.
