Robert Frost Signed ALS Dated 6 Months After 3rd Pulitzer Prize Win
ALS

A 1p autograph letter twice signed by American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963), the first time when writing out the name of his wife, Elinor White Frost (1875-1938), as "Mrs Frost" within the text; and the second time when signing at the conclusion as "Robert Frost." October 29, 1937. Amherst, Massachusetts. Inscribed on watermarked Eaton's paper. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds. A tiny corner fold at upper left, with a few a tiny ink smudge located near the top edge. Pencil-inscribed "School files" along the top edge verso. Else near fine. 6.125" x 8".

Frost wrote this letter to W.L. Field (1876-1963), the longtime Headmaster of Milton Academy, a college-preparatory school located about 100 miles to the east of Amherst in Milton, Massachusetts. Frost, who was active in the secondary education and university lecture circuit, had previously spoken at Milton Academy. In this letter, the poet regretfully declines an immediate return invitation to Milton Academy, citing his wife Elinor's poor health. Indeed, Elinor would die following a massive heart attack just five months later, in March 1938, while wintering in Gainesville, Florida. She suffered from a heart condition and had also been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In full:

"Dear Mr Field:

I can't tell you how much I like to be remembered at Milton. I wish I might be seeing you all again soon. I'm afraid, though, it can't be this year. Mrs Frost has been seriously ill, and I don't seem to want to be away from her for any more lectures than the two or three I have already promised. We are making an early start for the South and shall make a long winter of it in absolute quiet there.

With my best regards
Sincerely yours
Robert Frost

Amherst Mass

Six months earlier, in May 1937, Frost had been awarded his third Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in acknowledgement of "A Further Range," a poetry collection published in 1936. Universally recognized as a quintessentially American poet, Frost is known for his sparse and moving poetry. Frost was nominated 31 times for the Pulitzer Prize and won it four times. When he wasn't writing, Frost taught English at Amherst College and Middlebury College.
