Robert Gardner (American, b. 1919), Black Angel, 1964 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Robert Gardner was an American artist and lithographic printer born in Indianapolis in 1919. He held printer fellowships at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1962 and again from 1963 to 1964, printing editions for artists including Anni Albers, Sam Francis, Nathan Oliveira, Gego, and Peter Takal while also producing his own lithographs. His work is represented in the Tamarind collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the National Gallery of Art.

Black Angel, 1963–64, is a color lithograph in red and black on cream wove paper, printed by Gardner at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. A broad, hooded silhouette fills nearly the entire sheet, narrowing at the bottom into inward-turning claws. The red field presses around the figure’s shoulders and descends in heavy drips at either side. Titled “Black Angel” in pencil lower left, inscribed “Tamarind Impression” lower center, and signed and dated “Robert Gardner 1964” lower right, with the Tamarind bell and Robert Gardner printer blindstamps in the lower margin. The edition comprised 20 numbered artist’s impressions and nine additional Tamarind impressions retained by the workshop; this example is one of the nine. Verso numbered “960” in graphite. Sheet measures approximately 22.5 × 14 inches. Condition shows light age toning, minor handling creases and edge wear, with two old hinge-tape remnants on the verso; colors remain strong and the image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
