Robert Hansen (American, 1924-2013), Multiple Mirror, 1965 Lithograph
Robert Hansen (American, 1924–2013) was a Los Angeles painter, printmaker, and educator whose work transformed the human body into fragmented arrangements of heads, limbs, eyes, and masklike shapes. Born in Osceola, Nebraska, Hansen studied at the University of Nebraska and later taught at Occidental College in Los Angeles. His long-running Man-Men series was executed in industrial lacquer and enamel on rigid panels as well as in lithography, maintaining references to the figure while pushing its parts toward organic abstraction. Hansen worked with the Tamarind Lithography Workshop during the mid-1960s, producing individual Man-Men prints and the illustrated book Selections from Satan’s Saint. His work was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1962 exhibition Recent Painting U.S.A.: The Figure and is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Multiple Mirror, 1965, lithograph from aluminum in black ink on buff Arches paper. Four horizontal rows of simplified heads fill the central field, each reduced to an elongated outline with spare facial marks. Printed by Kinji Akagawa and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite along the lower margin “multiple mirror,” signed “Robert Hansen,” dated “1965,” and marked “Tamarind impression,” with the Tamarind and Akagawa blindstamps. “Tamarind impression” identifies an impression retained by the workshop outside the numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 24.25 x 17.25 inches. The sheet shows overall toning with scattered staining and handling marks, darker discoloration along the upper and lower edges, and a pronounced rectangular mat line visible on the verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
