Many of the policies Macquarie implemented, such as the acceptance of emancipated convicts as citizens, earned him criticism back in London. This criticism was met forthrightly by supporters of Macquarie’s reforms who created visual material and texts that lauded his achievements.The present engraving by Robert Havell was adapted from watercolours created by Major Taylor, of His Majesty's 48th Regiment of foot, in 1822. This is a fine example of one such image that presents the seat of the Australian government, and by extension, Macquarie’s term there, in a favourable light.Condition report: 72 x 88cm (framed)
