Description

Part of the Harbour of Port Jackson, and the Country between Sydney and the Blue Mountains, New South Walescoloured engraving on paper45 x 61cmFootnote: Under the administration of Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824) - 5th Governor of New South Wales - at the beginning of the 19th century, Sydney began to transition from a penal colony to a free settlement. Many of the policies Macquarie implemented, such as the acceptance of emancipated convicts as citizens, earned him criticism back in London. This criticism was met forthrightly by supporters of Macquarie’s reforms who created visual material and texts that lauded his achievements. The present engraving by Robert Havell was adapted from watercolours created by Major Taylor, of His Majesty's 48th Regiment of foot, in 1822. This is a fine example of one such image that presents the seat of the Australian government, and by extension, Macquarie’s term there, in a favourable light.Condition report: 72 x 88cm (framed)
