Robert Merrill Nautical Ship's Sestrel Unit W/ Gimbaled Sestrel
DESCRIPTION: Large brass nautical seafaring vessel's sestrel binnacle featuring a gimbaled sestrel by Robert Merrill (fl. 1838-1864), leading nautical instrument maker in the U.S. during the mid-19th century (later Robert Merrill & Sons in 1865). Sestrel housing is mounted on a wooden column and is flanked by Kelvin's balls. Compass dial is marked in all capitals "Robert Merrill New York" and "Capt. G. Morris Improved Compass" and is finished with a fleur-de-lis marking north.
