Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) Untitled, 1977 Ink on paper 5-7/8 x 4-1/2 inches (14.9 x 11.4 cm) (sheet) Initialed and dated lower right: RM / 77 PROVENANCE: Long Point Gallery, Provincetown, Massachusetts, 1977; Private collection; Albert Merola Gallery, Provincetown, Massachusetts; Private collection, circa 1995. LITERATURE: K. Rogers, Robert Motherwell Drawings: A Catalogue Raisonné, Vol. 2: Drawings, New Haven and London, 2022, p. 428, no. D1094, illustrated. NOTE: Katy Rogers notes about the present lot and related works in Robert Motherwell Drawings: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 428: "In 1977 Motherwell made a series of small drawings to be included on a limited-edition set of posters composed of unique works by members of the Long Point Gallery in Provincetown. The limited-edition posters, meant to raise funds to run the cooperative gallery, included either ten or thirteen sets of original works (records vary), as well as an offset printed poster. While a number of the Motherwell drawings were removed from the original mixed-media compilations at varying points in time--some as early as 1983--others remain lost from view and may still be attached to the limited-edition, multi-artist posters. . . . The imagery used in these drawings relates to Motherwell's large 1975 painting The Spanish Death (Flam, Rogers, and Clifford 2012, no. P838). Motherwell reengaged with the imagery from that work in a series of small paintings on canvas board in 1977 (see, for example, Spanish Death II, Flam, Rogers, and Clifford 2012, no. P939)."
