Robert Ripley
New York, NY, n.d. [ca. 1930s]

Robert Ripley "Believe It or Not" Signed Letterhead
Signature

A sheet of blank letterhead signed by American entertainer Robert Ripley (1890-1949). 1p, 8" x 10.75", New York, NY, n.d. [ca. 1930s]. Boldly signed and inscribed at center, "To Bill Kahn/ Ripley/ 'Believe It or Not.'" While undated, the page likely originates from Ripley's early years working under Kind Features Syndicate, the content distribution studio which helped propel his brand to international status. Exhibits flattened letter folds, darkened toning, and intermittent edge wear throughout. Right side edge appears marginally trimmed, with scattered handling marks. Otherwise, very good.

A newspaper cartoonist, Robert Ripley launched the "Believe it or Not" brand with a series of cartoon captions in the late 1910s. The concept, based on sharing strange or quirky stories and trivia with the American public, proved extremely popular, and Ripley eventually expanded "Ripley's Believe It or Not" from the newspapers to television, radio, and themed landmarks like his Chicago museum, the Odditorium.

From the collection of Joseph "Bill" Kahn, Jr. Mr. Kahn began collecting as a boy; writing to notables requesting their autographs. Our October auction includes signatures obtained by him over many decades, including such notables as Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
