Robert Wallace Martin for Southall Pottery Rare Pair of Large Stoneware Planters

[ translate ]

Salt-glazed and moulded in high relief with birds and nests against repeated pattern of foliate scrolls beneath further inverted egg-and-dart-type moulding, the base interior pierced, both with impressed mark R. W. Martin Southall Pottery to both sides (one stamped twice to one side), one bearing incised signature R. W. Martin Southall 1877 to base. Dimensions: 79.5cm wide, 22cm deep, 21cm highCondition Report One is broken into two parts, it appears that it could be restored but we cannot speak to this and advise consulting an expert in the field regarding this. The whole planter is overall heavily worn but intact with chips, losses and abrasions, particularly to the exposed corners and edges; two prominent cracks to right side, one leading from a notable area of damage, and numerous to the rear side; further hairlines and firing cracks present; this planter bears the signature to the base. The second broken as stated, looks to have been repaired to the rear side previously, otherwise similar condition to the other. Additional images available.
