Robert William Wood (American, 1889-1979) Afternoon Bluebonnet Pasture, circa 1920s Oil on canvas 25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm) Signed lower right: Robt. Wood PROVENANCE: Private collection, Texas. Robert William Wood is one of the most popular and reproduced American artists of the Twentieth Century. Born in England, Wood immigrated to the United States at the age of 19 where he soon became an itinerant painter, making his living doing casual work and selling or bartering his small paintings as he traveled throughout rural America. He settled for a time in San Antonio, Texas, concentrating on the Texas landscape as his primary subject matter, creating scenes that featured the beauty of the hill country around San Antonio and Austin. Wood soon developed a national reputation as a painter, especially after moving to Laguna Beach, California. In yet another move, to Woodstock, New York, Wood produced landscapes inspired by the passage of the seasons on the forests near his studio. A publishing agreement led to inexpensive reproductions of his work being made available to the public. These popular works quickly made him one of the most well-known painters in the U.S. His original paintings are still highly sought after by collectors, especially in Texas and California.
