Roberto MATTA (1911–2002)
Figure on a Blue Background
Color lithograph on paper, signed in pencil in the lower right corner
50x65cm

A leading figure in Surrealism and the international avant-garde, Roberto Matta developed a unique pictorial universe at the intersection of abstraction, dreams, and the unconscious. Close to André Breton, Salvador Dalí, and Max Ernst, he contributed to the renewal of the Surrealist language before exerting a decisive influence on American Abstract Expressionism, particularly on Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Motherwell. His compositions, with their dizzying perspectives and filled with biomorphic forms and cosmic spaces, reflect a radical exploration of the human psyche. Blending automatism, science fiction, and abstraction, Matta established a profoundly innovative vision of 20th-century painting.
