Roger Marx Collection. Paintings, pastels, drawings, watercolors, sculptures.
Paris, Galerie Manzi, Joyant, 15 rue de la Ville-l'Évêque, May 11 and 12, 1914. In-4, paperback, printed cover.
A rare catalog from the posthumous sale of the Roger Marx collection; Marx was a critic and art historian who played a particularly significant role in championing modern artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The sale brought together a remarkable collection of paintings, pastels, drawings, and watercolors by Bazille, Bernard, Besnard, Bonnard, Mary Cassatt, Daumier, Degas, Gauguin, Ingres, Jongkind, Manet, Monet, Moreau, Puvis de Chavannes, Raffaëlli, Renoir, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, and others, as well as sculptures by Bartholomé, Carpeaux, Daumier, Gauguin, Constantin Meunier, and Rodin.
Auction conducted by F. Lair-Dubreuil and Henri Baudoin, with Durand-Ruel and J. & G. Bernheim-Jeune serving as experts. Illustrated catalog with separate reproductions. Handwritten hammer prices listed next to many lots, an interesting feature for the history of the art market.
Paperback copy; cover worn and soiled; edges and spine worn; small tears and imperfections; interior remains in satisfactory condition.
